About
You should see my copious studies and prolific stash of paintings and assemblages, plus my work currently exhibited all over the world – all drawn from my inexhaustible well of talent… IN MY MIND!@?!! Good gosh woman – tell the people the truth!
Okay. I bloomed late in my early thirties and went to college, majoring in studio art. I honestly did excel, maintaining excellent grades, showing and selling much of my work. Late in my senior year, I dropped everything and scurried off to San Francisco to make the big bucks in the burgeoning world of word processing (waaaay before the PC).
Barely dabbling in art on my way to the age of 42, the lack of productivity ate at my conscience until I finally quit working in the big city, found part time employment and rented an enormous loft in Oakland. It was in an old iron foundry. It was filthy and minimally improved with three floors, one staircase (we had to build stairs to the third floor) and electricity with plumbing only on the middle floor.
I was meeting with the manager to sign the lease when the earthquake struck on October 17, 1989. We postponed the signing for a couple days while the damage were assessed. A downspout had fallen off one of the buildings in the complex. I figured if that was the only damage, the building was safe enough for me! I and several friends worked for weeks making the interior livable.
I started painting much more, participated in exhibitions, two Open Studio tours and sold several paintings. I loved my life for the next three years, working pretty much part-time, improving the loft and making art. All good things do seem to come to an end though, and after a few life changing events occurred, my productivity dried up.
Fast forward to 2010. I again have ample studio space downstairs from where I live in Bethel Island. The art I want to make is dancing around in my head and I am optimistic that I will be much more productive from now onward.
I am also a one-year breast cancer survivor. On December 30, 2008, I had a bilateral mastectomy. 2009 was filled with chemotherapy, radiation treatments and recovery trials and tribulations. I have started several paintings though, completed one and finished one assemblage.
The 64th birthday in November was a little daunting, but I’m determined to crank out a lot of art before I finish growing up to be an old woman.
You are cordially invited to come along for the ride.
